LISD Demand Letter for Teacher Rotations

December 3, 2020

Greetings LISD Board,

We hope all of you are doing well.  Congratulations to the recent election winners Monica Garcia, Rick Garza, and Guadalupe “Lupillo” Gomez.  We look forward to working with you and the rest of the LISD board.  Personally, we are very proud of what you are doing at the district, but we continue with challenges.

As the pandemic rages on and will only get worse, our members and employees demand teacher rotations on and off campus except during testing.  Our organization has had multiple conversations with main office directors and assistant superintendents about starting a plan for teacher rotations, mainly C&I and members of the LISD COVID committee.  We realize that rotations don’t happen at the flip of a switch.  We also realize that teacher rotations are not prohibited by TEA.  We realize that rotations will not eliminate COVID positive cases, but they will mitigate the spread.  We are encouraged that LISD has agreed to work on this.  Our understanding is that there will be an agenda item on this matter in January, but we need the district to ready to implement in January.  We cannot wait for plan development.

Here is some context on our recent survey.  We sent out over 950 texts to our members/LISD employees through Hustle, a person-to-person texting app.  Of the total respondents, over 82% said they want rotations.  Many agreed to gather at the placita to demonstrate their resolve.  There was also an independent petition on Change.org that garnered over 500 signatures.  We welcome the community support to get rotations at LISD.

Wishing you a joyous and safe holiday season,
